Everyone grows up differently. We all come from different kinds of families, have different experiences and we all develop different views of the world around us as a result of our environment.
Some people seem to have all the luck and others seem to struggle from the moment they take their first breath. I would place myself somewhere in the middle of the scale. My childhood wasn’t an easy one. I wouldn’t say my life has been extremely easy either.
I was a troubled kid; scared and anxious for much of the time. As a teenager, I was angry with the world. I did poorly in school; not because I wasn’t smart, but because I didn’t care. Maybe it would have been more accurate to say that I felt I wasn’t cared for. I was defiant and rude and I liked to cause trouble. I liked to push the limits to see how much I could get away with. Negative attention was still attention of some kind.
I remember being determined that when I became an adult, I would listen to kids the way I wanted to be listened to as a teen. I would do everything differently than my parents had done. I would be different than my teachers and guidance counselors and I would change the world one kid at a time, because I knew how it felt to be a kid. I knew what it was like to be misunderstood. What I didn’t realize was that I was missing a few pieces to the puzzle. At 34, I’m still missing some pieces to the puzzle. I wonder how many times people say to themselves, “If I’d known then what I know now…”
Thankfully, along the way I learned some pretty amazing values that have brought me to where I am today. I may be a few pieces short of a puzzle; but still successful.
I was lucky to have had a few very significant people in my life who have allowed me the opportunity to adopt some of their virtues for myself. Qualities like kindness, gratitude, loyalty, tact and fortitude.
I had an amazing grandfather. He was a kind and gentle man. He always sang, “You are my Sunshine ” to me as a little girl and that is how I believe he always felt about me. Although he could be gentle and kind, that didn’t in any way forfeit his ability to tell it like it was whether you wanted to hear it or not. Grandpa had firm beliefs and wasn’t afraid to share them; especially if he saw you making a wrong turn. Stringent and coarse advice was borne of deep love and worry. He was meticulous in all areas of his life. His home and belongings were always in order. His finances were carefully planned and he painstakingly carried out that plan without ever losing sight of his goals. He was a man of fortitude and forged ahead in the most tumultuous of times. He was loyal; his hard work was for his wife and family.
